As a member of the Governor’s Council, I am strongly invested in the clemency role that we have. We, as Councillors, make the final determination on whether to approve a Governor’s request to grant a pardon (or a commutation, which is another form of clemency but different from the pardon work we are discussing here).
Pardons, and clemency work in general, can have such an incredible and meaningful impact on a person’s life, as well as for their loved ones, their family, and their community. To help prompt more pardon applications, I am hosting a panel discussion with experts in the pardon process. I hope that by disseminating the information on how to get a pardon, who is eligible, what the guidelines are, how the decision is made and what considerations are factors in the process, that people will have a better understanding, and more people will ask for and be granted the clemency that will improve their lives.
